What is a funeral celebrant?

I have just received a lovely note from a family to thank me for writing and conducting their loved one’s funeral. They wrote:

“Funeral Celebrant – just two words to describe a person strong enough to maintain total composure in the face of tragedy, and soft enough to provide comfort and peace to those who are hurting.”

It was an honour and a privilege to be part of the goodbye.
